A New form of plutonium discovered by scientists

October 23, 2019

Flash news! A new and stable form of plutonium is discovered by the scientist’s team from Helmholtz Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR). Plutonium- radioactive chemical element is an actinide metal of silvery-gray appearance and tarnishes when exposed to air. It also forms a dull coating when oxidized. It is very difficult to transport, store, and dispose of this unstable chemical element. And hence scientists of different universities are finding new ways to tackle these problems. Recently, Helmholtz Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR team has made an observation by dissolving the Plutonium (VI) in water. In the transition into plutonium dioxide it is noted that the Pu (VI) passed through pentavalent plutonium (V) which is a transient phase – means solid and stable. The new elements- Pu (V) was confirmed by the researchers tested it in the Rossendorf Beamline (ROBL). ROBL is an x-ray absorption spectrometer that can study the energy of radioactive elements by exposing them to x-rays, then measuring their fluorescence.
