Because the population of dugongs (sea cows), in the Indian seas has been declining to critical levels. So, marine biologists and conservationists have long called for a reserve for sea cows. Environment Secretary Supriya Sahu said, 500 square kilometers is simply a rough estimate. We will undertake a full investigation and a stakeholder meeting, following which the actual extent of the conservation reserve will be announced,” she noted.
