NASA launches ICON Space Weather Satellite- Free Current Affairs of October
NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) has dropped a new spacecraft called Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON) to study dynamic zones of Earth’s Ionosphere. This ICON mission of NASA started with a delay of 2 years. It is reported that the ICON satellite was launched from an aircraft flying over the Atlantic ocean near the Florida coat. After five seconds of the satellite release, the Pegasus rocket attached to it ignited, and ICON proceeded on its way. It was actually planned to launch in late 2017 but delayed due to the problems with the Pegasus XL rocket. It studies the airglow formed from gases in the ionosphere and also measures the charged environment right around the 580-kilometer-high (360-mile-high) spacecraft. A NASA launched satellite called Gold in 2018, also studies the upper atmosphere, but from much higher up. Similarly, more missions are planned in the coming years to study the ionosphere, including from International Space Station (ISS).

It is reported that Mukesh Ambani has topped the Forbes richest person list for the 12th Consecutive year. According to the Forbes list of richest Indians of the year 2019, Gautam Adani occupied the second position with a net worth of @15.7 billion. Owners of Ashok Leyland, Hinduja brothers were in third place with a net worth of $15.7 billion net worth. With $15 billion net worth, Shapoorji Pallonji Group’s Pallonji Mistry was on the fourth rank. Kotak Mahindra Bank’s Uday Kotak ranked fifth with $14.8 billion net worth followed by HCL Technologies Shiv Nadar with a net worth of $14.4 billion.
It’s time for Annual Ganga River Dolphin Census- 12th October 2019 Current Affairs
The World Wide Fund for Nature-India in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department conducts the annual Ganges river dolphin census. It is reported that the census is undertaken along the 250-km-long riverine stretch of Upper Ganga between Hastinapur Wildlife Sanctuary and Narora Ramsar site began in Bijnor. This year the tandem boat survey method is being used for the census to get an accurate count of the endangered species. The forest officials informed that this year the upstream of Bijnor Ganga barrage up to Balawali has also been included. Which adds an extra 30 km to the area being covered by the census which will conclude on October 15. Dumping of single-use plastic, industrial pollution, fishing, and dredging are the major threats to dolphins in this region. An increase in no.of dams and barrages also affects dolphins.
Bengal Govt to set up Kanyashree University to empower girls- Top Current Affairs of October
The West Bengal govt has decided to set up a Kanyashree University in Nadia district and Kanyashree colleges across the West Bengal state. They achieved the first step by laying the foundation stone of the new university at Krishnanagar in Nadia district in January. The main motive of the Kanyashree scheme to empower girls and let them go to study in schools and delay their marriages until the age of 18 years. To achieve this a budget of Rs 7,000 crore (till Jan 2019) has been allocated. To date, Kanyashree has empowered over 60 lakh girl students from socio-economically disadvantaged families through conditional cash transfers. Mamata Banerjee government awarded by the United Nations for Public Service for the Kanyashree scheme in 2017. This scheme has two cash transfer components an annual incentive of Rs. 750 to girls in the age group 13 to 18 years old.

Gurindervir Singh (Punjab) emerged as the winner of the bronze medal by a margin of 0.0044 seconds from his team-mate Harjit Singh.MP Jabir (AFI) rewrote the men’s 400m hurdles meet record, winning the final in 49.41 seconds.

Chandi Prasad Bhatt, an environmentalist of Uttarakhand has won the Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration for the years 2017 and 2018. Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration is given in the memory of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to hold the cause of National Integration. This 85-year-old environmentalist has been awarded for his best services in promoting and preserving National Integration in the country. The award will be presented on 31st October 2019 at Jawahar Bhawan, New Delhi. He was also the founder of Dasholi Gram Swarajya Sangh(DGSS) in Gopeshwar, Uttarakhand in 1964. This DGSS has led the foundation to the Chipko Movement, in saving trees. He also won Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1982 and Padma Bhushan in 2005 for community leadership.
