An experiment on ‘Artificial Sun’ was undertaken at the Hefei Institute of Physical Science in China‘s eastern province of Anhui. The experiment lays a solid scientific and experimental foundation for fusion reactor operation. Over 10,000 Chinese and foreign scientists were participating in the $948 million Experiential Advanced Superconducting Tokamak project (EAST). EAST, a fusion reactor, successfully operated at 70 million degrees Celsius for almost 20 minutes in a recent test. The temperature was five times that of the Sun. The auxiliary heating system for the EAST reactor is being tested in order to make it “hotter” and “durable.”
