On 03rd September 2021, the Tamil Nadu government announced plans to establish India’s first Dugong Conservation Reserve at Palk Bay, on the state’s southeast coast. The reserve will stretch from Adiramapattinam to Amapattinam in the Palk Bay’s northern reaches. Because the population of dugongs (sea cows), in the Indian seas has been declining to critical levels. So, marine biologists and conservationists have long called for a reserve for sea cows. Environment Secretary Supriya Sahu said, 500 square kilometers is simply a rough estimate. We will undertake a full investigation and a stakeholder meeting, following which the actual extent of the conservation reserve will be announced,” she noted.
