Bangladesh- UN sign MoU: 09 October 2021 Current Affairs
On 09th October, Saturday, the Bangladeshi government and the United Nations signed an agreement to relocate Rohingya refugees to a newly built facility on Bhasan Char Island. The MoU lays out the policy framework for services and common protection for the Rohingya humanitarian (stateless Muslim minority) response on the island, according to a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) news release. The Memorandum of Understanding recognizes Bangladesh’s goodwill in sheltering over 9 lakh Rohingya refugees. Bangladesh’s government aims at building a second nuclear power plant in the country’s southern region. On 10th October, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina opened the installation work of the reactor pressure vessel at the Rooppur nuclear power plant, saying that when the present one is completed, another power plant would be built, for which the government is looking for an appropriate location. Rooppur is Bangladesh’s first nuclear power station, developed with Russian financial and scientific assistance. By 2024, the Rooppur nuclear power station, with a capacity of 2400 megawatts, should be operational. Prime Minister Hasina stated that the nuclear power facility is absolutely following the (International Atomic Energy Agency) IAEA’s safety requirements. For the safety of the nuclear power plant at Rooppur, she said a four-tier security system was put in place, along with the latest and most sophisticated equipment.
