RBI Governor for Three More Years: Daily GK Current Affairs
The government has confirmed Shaktikanta Das‘ reappointment as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India for a three-year term. The cabinet nominations committee, which includes Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, made the decision on October 28th evening. The re-appointment will take effect on December 10th, or until additional instructions are issued. Mr. Das was appointed Governor of the Reserve Bank of India in December 2018 for a three-year term. He was previously the Finance Ministry’s Economic Affairs Secretary. He is the first RBI Governor to receive an extension under the current BJP administration; previous governors either resigned or returned to academia. Rs 44,000 Crore to States, UTs: Latest Current Affairs Today
On the 28th of October, the Finance Ministry issued 44 thousand crore rupees in lieu of GST compensation to states and union territories with legislatures under the back-to-back credit facility. The total sum issued in the current financial year is one lakh 59 thousand crore rupees, after taking into account an earlier release of one lakh 15 thousand crore rupees. According to the Ministry, this payment is in addition to the regular GST compensation that is paid out every two months from actual cess collection. Following the 43rd GST Council Meeting on May 28th, it was decided that the Central Government would borrow one lakh 59 thousand crore rupees and release it to States and Union Territories (UTs) to bridge the resource gap caused by the short release of Compensation due to insufficient funds in the Compensation Fund.

The Reserve Bank Of India (RBI) has stated that it intends to make microlending collateral-free for all lenders, not only microfinance institutions (MFIs). RBI deputy governor Rajeshwar Rao, speaking at the Sa-Dhan National Conference on ‘Revitalizing Financial Inclusion‘ on 27th October, said that present policies have created a non-level playing field. He claims that the present regulatory structure, which was put in place to make loans available to low-income people while also protecting borrowers from lenders’ harsh collection techniques, only applies to NBFC-MFIs. Other lenders, who account for around 70% of the microfinance portfolio, are exempt from the same regulatory restrictions. Because microlending serves a social purpose, Rao advised lenders to be cautious and avoid duplicating big banks. In microfinance, he suggested, putting profit ahead of social and welfare aims may not be the wisest decision.

The Chennai-Mysore-Chennai Shatabdi Express is Southern Railway’s first Integrated Management Systems-certified (IMS) train.
